VHS tapes degrade over time, each 10-25 years up to 20% degradation in the tape itself. This happens by charge loss, the magnetic charge that holds information on the tape; exposure to magnets/magnetic appliances; and moisture, heat & dirt. Negatives & photos can begin to fade, lose color, warp and become brittle over time. When exposed to heat or moisture, pictures can stick together and become damaged. Even in photo albums, off-gassing from the paper or adhesives in the books can cause fading or damage to photos. Digitizing your memories is the best way to preserve them.
